Tuesday Tips & Tricks – Cake Baking

I’m starting a new series where I share some tips and tricks for baking and cake/cookie decorating. First up, I have my top tips for baking the best cake.

Baking the best version of your cake starts even before you crack the first egg.

Even slight changes in oven temperature can make a noticeable difference in baking! To ensure you are baking at the right temperature, use an oven thermometer. This can also help you know when your oven is at the desired temperature. Some ovens will set off the preheat alert when only the portion nearest the sensor is.

Dropping the temp by even 25F can also ensure a more moist, tender, and flatter cake.

Another helpful preparation tip is to bring cold ingredients to room temperature. This helps the ingredients emulsify and create a fluffy, tender cake!

Now it’s time to start prepping the batter.

Creating the best cake means making sure you are using the correct attachments for mixing and measuring ingredients precisely. Baking is a science; you need to make sure your proportions are correct.

You also want to make sure you add ingredients in the best way and don’t overmix your batter. Small changes can make a big difference!

Now that the oven is prepped and the batter is ready, you are ready to bake!

If you are cooking in a round pan that’s larger than 8 in, or a rectangular pan larger than 9×13, a baking core or nail can be used for even baking. Instead of only baking from the outside in, the metal piece helps bake from the center as well.

Simple changes like tapping the cake pan, leaving the oven closed, and cooling for the desired amount all help to create the best possible version of your cake!
