Did you know that today is World Teachers’ Day? I knew about Teacher’s Appreciation Week, but didn’t realize there was also an international day to celebrate teachers. I’m from a family of educators, so I’ve seen firsthand the passion, patience, and dedication it takes to teach!
In addition to my bakery, I also work part time as a teacher at a preschool. Last month, our school hosted a retirement reception to honor our longtime director. She is leaving quite the legacy and we wanted to celebrate her commitment and dedication. I provided desserts for the celebration. What better day to share this sweet teacher-themed cake than on World Teacher Day?
Having been a director there for a long time, we expected a large crowd. I made a cake along with a few dozen cupcakes. The party was decorated in an earthy/fall color scheme which I wanted to use in the cupcake design. I used my fondant molds to create various sized florals.

For the cake, I wanted to stick with the “Thank You” theme and incorporate lots of preschool-themed fondant decor. I created scissors, crayons, shapes, a pencil, “ABC”, “123”, and a chalkboard.

For the chalkboard, I took a tiny bit of leftover buttercream and smudged it on to give it more of a chalkboard look instead of being solid black. I loved adding little details to the pieces – wood lines on the chalkboard frame, crayon labels, and pencil marks. The pieces all came together on a smoothed frosted cake with a piped border.
